An Office That Follows You Everywhere and Works Consistently Well

Google Docs has been the most reliable option for me to count on in changing work environments because it only works in a web browser. This unifies the experience and since Google Chrome is available on all major operating systems, it's easy to get the exact same look and feel as long as the version of the web browser being used is the same on all machines. It's a portable office suite that is more than enough for most needs and it brings some important advantages that can't be overstated, such as its collaboration capabilities and the fact that you have access remotely to all your files as long as you are logged into your account. There is also no need to keep the software up to date, which can be an additional relief for large or small companies that do not have a particularly strong IT department. Google Docs simplifies the life of beginners and advanced users alike, being easy to use and providing real and measurable benefits.

Google Docs Replaces Office 365 (if you can handle the initial transition)

Google Docs replaces all lightweight usage of Word, Excel etc. However, if your company heavily relies on Excel it'll be difficult to convince the power users to switch. Sheets has calculation limitations with very large data sets. It's an easy replacement for 99% of use cases for Word with all the advantages of easy sharing within a G Suite environment.

Google Docs

Three of the members of my team work remotely, so we are not always in the same office. Google Docs allows me collaborate with them on all of my projects. My team can see/suggest edits and even comment on documents without loosing the original content. Because we are all so busy, it great to be able to do this at our own convenience and not have to block out time in our calendars for meetings.

Confusing users nomenclature and display...and at times, terrifying!

It definitely is a decent solution to collaborative document editing, but could be improved to ensure a more secure experience, without inconveniencing the users.

Do we even need to discuss how cool this tool is?!!!

This is the backbone of our office admin work. We use it for collaborating with the clients, they review and comment on the docs before we can finalize and go for signing or live work. We use this for our meeting agendas and also for simple documentation and training.

For a cloud-based software, Google Docs feels like a full-fledged word processor with added bonuses. Sharing a document couldn't be easier: it suffices to add a list of email addresses or create a link to be inserted into emails or other mediums. Having the ability to have multiple collaborators working on the same document at any given point is a strong feature that makes Google Docs an excellent choice in many different work settings. Because it's all in the cloud and files are stored on Google Drive, it becomes very convenient when you have to open files from new devices in new locations, as you can automatically retrieve all your personal data anywhere you go by simply logging into your Google account, making it a breeze to finish working on a document without depending on the work space being used. It is especially useful since you can also get access to your personal photos, bookmarks, contacts and other details stored in your account so that you don't miss anything you need to get your work done. There is an auto-save feature that's prominently showed while you edit your documents so you always have the tranquility that your changes are being taken into account. Being free is another noteworthy advantage offered by this tool. It's even capable of working offline: changes will be saved to the cloud when you can access Internet again. If you don't like to type, are slow at it or it's not convenient for you at that time, you can also use the voice typing feature.

Puntos en contra

Unlike other stand-alone word processors that you can install on your system, Google Docs only integrates with your Google Drive: this can be a great idea for many users, but it limits how you can work with your files because you first have to upload everything to Google Drive and can't work directly from stored files on your computer in the format used by Google Docs. There is the ability to add mathematical expressions which can come in handy, but it's not as easy to use as is the case with other software as it doesn't clearly highlight where the expression needs to be entered and it doesn't skip automatically to the next portion to fill when typing the "Tab" key. When you change some settings in the menus, little pop-ups will appear in the top-right corner and won't disappear until you click on them, which I find annoying. Because Google Drive isn't officially available on the Linux operating system, it is harder to synchronize files to work with inside Google Docs as they first need to be uploaded to Google Drive either manually through the web interface or with external, unofficial tools. On smaller screens, it's useful to toggle the menus at the top to hide them, but any keyboard shortcut that triggers an item in those menus won't work until you toggle them again so they are visible, which shouldn't be a requirement and makes working on smaller screens a little bit of a pain sometimes.

Our company completely switched off of using Office 365. There was a transition cost and many people complained about minor features missing from Word which we had to find workarounds. However, we were able to find workarounds and since it's included with our G Suite license it's saved us thousands per year. Everything is backed up and easy to share and we don't have to worry about dealing with future updates with Microsoft that cause us to buy new licenses or a costly yearly payment.

Puntos en contra

It's getting very close to feature parity with Office however it's still not 1-1. Google Sheets *just* released the ability to check for duplicates, prior you had to use a freemium browser extension. Training users who were very familiar and comfortable with Word was time consuming even though they are similar.

I love that fact that I can share a document with my entire team and they are able to edit/add content remotely. I have use other types of software that provide the same type service but they were very clunky and had a lot less features than their apps. Google Docs is very intuitive and very easy to understand which makes it a breeze for people on my team who have never used it before.

Puntos en contra

I have noticed that with larger more complex documents, that it does take some additional time to load. It's understandable and not that big of an inconvenience, and in the scope of things definitely NOT a deal breaker.

Comprehensive, works with text docs and spreadsheets, provides essential features consistent with Microsoft Office applications. Integration with Slack is OK but confusing. I seem to have to click through several links before I get to the actual Google Doc whenever I click a link in Slack.

Puntos en contra

I'm not a fan of auto-save in general. It leaves me feeling insecure, and wondering if a doc has been saved. Some additional indication of saving would be appreciated, ideally displaying when a doc is saved, and the last time it was saved. Or even add a Save button for those who feel better having one.
But this is minor. The one thing that actually freaked me out during a session was a mysterious username that appeared as I was editing a doc: "anonymous panda" I think it was. While I think I was the anonymous panda, this was not apparent. Also, I'm still not even sure this was the case. This definitely needs to be improved. I've worked on docs collaboratively while 3 "anonymous X" users appeared and left, for no reason whatsoever. That's just downright freaky! A frustrating user experience is one thing, but a frightening one is just crazy! At one point, one of the anonymous users even began editing the doc! So, definitely add some alerts when new users enter the 'room' and indicate what they can do (and who they might be), and give the user some options to abort or modify the doc (or preferences) to prevent any unwanted editing.

I like nearly everything about this tool. I can literally work from any computer, anywhere as long as I can access my Google Docs files. I worked on a few things during the last holidays, at the hotel we were staying (wife was not happy). I had an urgent task to review and I pulled up the files in a borrowed computer, finished the task, cleaned all history for security (it was a borrowed computer after all) and was off to the beach.

Google docs provides a lot of extra add-ons which comes in really handy. Though most of the top shelf stuff are paid, not free like the Google docs itself. But they really make your life easier. And they are adding more functionality over time!

Puntos en contra

Only downside I have found in my years of use is the files get sluggish if there is a lot of data. A desktop solution like MS Word opens up really fast and loads all the text and images/diagrams in a sec, but being a cloud app, Google doc takes a few seconds to respond if you have loaded tons of stuff in there. But that is unaviodable and I dont hold it against them.

Another rare annoyance is the server issue. Again since it is a cloud service, the app can not be expected to be live 100% of the time. A couple years back it was getting more frequent, like multiple times in a month. But it is a lot more sable now. I havent seen such an error in months.
