Codemagic Experience

Revisado el 24/5/2022

The overall experience is great. Setup the app and deployed in the app store and play store , loved it.

Puntos a favor

1. There is a free plan available and pay as you go plan available
2. I can build ipa and apk in cloud and share it
3. The setup is very easy
4. The UI is super nice and love the experience
5. ci-cd works great
6. add projects from github gitlab etc.

Desventajas

Everythings seems great , just add some tutorial videos or samples in docs.

Automating deployment of a multi-tenant whitelabel Ionic app

Revisado el 1/7/2021

The time between code in a PR to an actual testing APK or IPA on is very short now. And also doing a production deploy for any of our whitelabel clients is really a breeze.
During the setup phase Codemagic support was also very responsive and helpfull.

Puntos a favor

The product was really easy to set up. Coming from an environment where we had little experience with setting up a CI/CD for a mobile app it was really easy to configure automatic deploys to TestFlight and Play Console.

Desventajas

Coming from Nevercode, the predecessor of Codemagic it was a bit of a shame that we lost the ability to do configurations in a webapp.
Having multiple build configurations from the same repository to different TestFlights and Play Console it would have been easier to be to set all the keystores and certificates in a webapp.
This only seems to be the case for Ionic apps though.

More or less satisfied

Revisado el 6/7/2021

It's been fairly positive. It does feel like there are some missing features, or that some were put together in a way that isn't super useful. I wish there was a way to invalidate the cache with the click of a button like with Nevercode. Also, caching doesn't seem to save much on build time (at least for iOS). Support is usually responsive (though we've had times were we don't get answers for a week).

Puntos a favor

For the most part, it is low/no code. It didn't take too long to get setup. Issues were typical mobile CI tinkering.

Desventajas

It's a bit hard to navigate the UI. Frequently have trouble finding things like where to encrypt data, etc.

The first configuration is really hard for a new user

Revisado el 29/6/2021

First time configuration was really hard. All in all Codemagic is my favorite tool for android deployment.

Puntos a favor

The documentation for new users is a bit insufficient. Mac Pro machines are a bit expensive (for our country).

Desventajas

- Codemagic make easier a deployment after the first configuration. It's really really easy.
- Linux machines are fast and cheap. Android deployment is really cheap and easy.

Razones para cambiar a Codemagic

Codemagic looks more basic and cheaper than others.

Everyone should use Codemagic

Revisado el 12/7/2021

Puntos a favor

I ran into Codemagic during its early Beta Phase and i haven't stopped using it since. It is easy to use, blazingly fast and saves time.

Building your Flutter app is a complicated and resource intensive task. My MacBook regularly struggled to keep up with the work, it was unusable at times.

Codemagic solves all those problems, and it provided enough free minutes for me for the last year.
It really helps with rapid development as new versions get automatically builded on push and deployed to testflight, all with literally no setup.

Desventajas

Sometimes the build just fails with no real explanation. With standard MacMini VM the task before the real build can take some time. Because of that fixing bugs can be a bit of a pain.

Thank you!

We understand broken builds can be annoying. We would suggest running your builds locally to see if the same issue occurs.
Generally, errors could be tricky and misleading and do not specifically refer to the root cause of the issue.

Great tool for our flutter development

Revisado el 1/7/2021

Puntos a favor

Codemagic supports Flutter which is great. It was really easy to get started and we had the pipeline running in second. Not only building but it was able to push apps to app stores which was really handy and helped us quickly deploy our apps. The free tier is generous.

Desventajas

No teams on the free tier but that is understandable.

Codemagic is great for Flutter

Revisado el 29/6/2021

Puntos a favor

- easy setup and use
- regular new features (webhooks monitor, .yaml editor, Linux machines, etc.)
- support

Desventajas

- missing the possibility to post release_notes with iOS builds
- missing the possibility to add additional info to the release_notes message (e.g. integration testing results to the Slack message)
- ugly build logs are on a black background (by design)

Does the job, and does it very well!

Revisado el 13/7/2021

Puntos a favor

What I like most about Codemagic is that they were the first to support Flutter and allowed me to create an easy workflow to release versions of our app. I would also like to point out that Codemagic team is always adding new features. They communicate very well though their slack channel, which I use every time I need some help (an the support team is awesome).

Desventajas

The support is based on European time. Not sure if they expanded this already, but if you want some quick official support and live on PST for example, you may have to wait a bit. But nothing critical.

Good value for money, saves tons of time

Revisado el 1/7/2021

It helped us minimize the time needed to distribute builds to our team.

Puntos a favor

It's very simple to set up and it hides the complexity of CI behind a friendly UI. Support team very responsive.

Desventajas

In the beginning, there wasn't too much documentation / implementation was changing fast, but it stabilized over the last months.

Fantastic platform deploying mobile apps

Revisado el 16/7/2021

Puntos a favor

Codemagic saves me lots of time and removes the need to manually build and deploy apps to the iOS and Android store. The platform has great UI many options to customize your CI/CD Pipeline. The mobile app allows me to download my apps once they have finished building which I love.

Desventajas

There is nothing I dislike about about Codemagic.

2 years with Codemagic saving the day - every day.

Revisado el 30/6/2021

One-button automated deployments to Apple Test Flight and email distribution to Android have been a godsend! I don't want to do what CM engineers do - which is keep the CI/CD pipeline working. That is a MAJOR, non-differentiated-work headache for any engineering group, especially small startups.

Puntos a favor

Most important: It simply works! I love the integration with Github and the ease of selecting a different branch to build-deploy. My CEO loves getting new builds almost every day to see the latest features. The CI/CD pipeline is so great!

Desventajas

Challenges to setup Google Play Store. Hopefully by following the CM docs I will figure out how to get my app on the Play Store. Also there seems to be too many deployment channels. Maybe this is needed but simpler would be better!

Makes building and deploying your Flutter apps so much easier

Revisado el 4/7/2021

We solve the problem of having to manually configure our apps for productive use, building them and uploading them to the app stores. We drastically reduce the time needed to uploading a new version of our apps, enabling us to publish it more frequent with less hassle and less potential for errors.

Puntos a favor

Once you have setup your publishing pipeline it is really comfortable to use. You do not have to worry about building your apps, configuring it for productive use, and uploading it to the app stores. While most of our requirements can be fulfilled with the workflow editor, all others could be solved using the scripts before or after each step. The documentation is really helpful and shows solution to many problems we were facing when setting up the delivery pipeline.

Desventajas

If you do not use the basic workflow it was quite difficult to setup the publishing pipeline. As soon as one script/part failed, you had to debug it and start the whole build from the start which can take quite a long time. It would be really helpful to have the ability to resume the build.

Alternativas consideradas

GitLab y Bitrise

Respuesta de Nevercode Traducir a Español

Thank you for your feedback.
We cannot do "resume build" due to some reasons. The most basic reason is after they fix the error we cannot guarantee that the fix did not break the previously passed steps. Therefore, it is not feasible to start a build from where they failed.

In this case, we would suggest you to download binary and running them in terminals for that.
Hope this was useful for you.
Happy building!

Mademedia uses Nevercode!

Revisado el 25/7/2016

At Made Media we rely on Nevercode throughout our development process, all the way from early tests to final releases. It is an incredible and essential tool that every software company needs! Being able to have centralized control over automated builds is amazing. Configuration takes seconds and the resulting built products get packaged, provisioned, and signed and distributed via installable links, all from the same environment, helping us focus on making our product better instead of wasting time on the tedious and repetitive build process.

Puntos a favor

Excellent Github integration; ability to track multiple-projects and branches; automated app provisioning and signing; automated reports on Slack and email; support for automated UI Tests and Amazon Web Services Device Farm.

Would recommend and actually have multiple times

Revisado el 6/7/2021

Automation, automation, automation.

Puntos a favor

As a developer, I'm very lazy and had build pipelines for web and API configured and happily working but building and releasing the Flutter app was always a pain, thanks to the joys of XCode. Codemagic allowed me to avoid opening XCode at least 90% of the time...
There are loads of clever features but the main thing is having a triggerable and consistent build pipeline for Flutter.

Desventajas

Really didn't have any issues with Codemagic.
Would love it if it could check if the build number clashes with the latest deployed build number to the App Stores to avoid wasting time building, just to have Apple decline the upload, but that's more of a feature request than a con.

Respuesta de Nevercode Traducir a Español

We have calculated that automating your CI/CD pipeline will save you around 20% of dev time!

Very good experience while using CodeMagic CI/CD

Revisado el 4/7/2021

Overall very good experience used CodeMagic CI/CD for almost around 35 apps.

Puntos a favor

Documentation helped for configuring CI/CD pipeline for native as well as hybrid mobile projects.

Desventajas

Need some improvements for Github checks in Github enterprise accounts. Already communicated with your core team. If you can provide it will be very helpful for our team.

Codemagic review

Revisado el 30/6/2021

for me who use the free version even with the session time limit I can still classify as one of the best production environment tools

Puntos a favor

it is absolutely essential for the cross-platform developer. With.o codemagic it is possible to validate and test the system without the need to create multiple virtual machines and spend time configuring environments.

Desventajas

I still find it a bit expensive, especially considering that many developers are "one-man companies", there should be a fixed weekly price for example. That it would be possible to hire the service for a week without deducting minutes.

Awesome product. If I would need the paid version I would definitly pay for this tool.

Puntos a favor

The simplicity to setup an pipeline. It's super easy to setup everythink the way I need it. Also the signing part for iOS is pretty easy which is complicated with other pipelines

Desventajas

Not much, maybe some syntax highlighting in the shell script parts.

Build iOS Apps without a Mac

Revisado el 9/8/2021

Puntos a favor

I love codemagic because I can deploy iOS applications without an apple device. I can also remote into the virtual mac machine and make changes within xcode. I can leave the app to build and go about my business and be notified via email if it succeeds or fails.

Desventajas

I love that I dont need a macbook to create iOS applications on

Puntos a favor

Codemagic is easy to use. Documentation is well written and easy to understand. Integration with our existing infrastructure was smooth and quick.

Good for handling my react-native deployment

Revisado el 1/7/2021

The setup is not straightforward and I would prefer a more detailed step by step documentation into setting up the deployment process.
However the complexities are linked to App Store/Play Console rather than Codemagic. I had some issues with deployment and I was helped quickly on the codemagic support Slack channel even when I am on the free tier currently.
The debugging capabilities for failed builds are quite nice and clear and it seems highly configurable.

Puntos a favor

I am using this software to deploy react-native app to App store and Play Console. This allows me to save a lot of time, as I can handle the releases automatically for both platforms. The support Slack channel was very good at helping me sort out an issue quickly too.

Desventajas

I would prefer more thorough step by step configuration into react native builds for android/ios.

Deploying and releasing iOS apps on both

Puntos a favor

I'm able to deploy my Flutter project on iOS too thanks to this piece of software. It also lets me see the logs in real time and set a timeout for too long builds.

Desventajas

It's pretty slow (simple Flutter iOS app = ~40 minutes) but it's fully understandable since I'm using the free tier.
