Zulip is the best chat/asynchronous communication tool that I have tried so far. It is not perfect, but for an organization with many members and generating hundreds of messages per day, it is the best option to keep things organized. We have been using Zulip at our institution only for ~1 month, but despite the inertia to change from previously used tools, we are now ~60 members, with more than ~4500 messages, and most people seem to be very happy with the change and not looking back.

Puntos a favor

+ open source (https://github.com/zulip)+ Cloud Standard Plan free for Research (https://zulip.com/plans/) + messages do not get deleted after a certain period of time.+ Unique topics feature that helps keeping conversations together (invaluable when a large number of members and conversations. Much better than threads in Slack/Discord/etc).+ Several interfaces: Web, Desktop (Mac, Linux, Windows), Mobile (ios, Android)+ strong and very active developing community https://zulip.com/development-community/+ rich formatting of messages: https://zulip.com/help/format-your-message-using-markdown+ integration and bots: https://zulip.com/integrations/

Desventajas

+ Mobile app not too polished yet + Not easy to create sub-organizations at the moment (but the Team is working on that)

Zulip: a very good tool for team communications

Revisado el 10/3/2023

Zulip helped us to get out of the bloated mailbox nightmare. Real time messaging (mattermost, slack, Whatsapp...) could not achieve long term and structured conversations we're having on differents subjects at the same time, and in various teams. Zulip was the perfect match for us. Zulip also has integration possiblities we use : we connected it to our membership billing software/mailing lists software, and get notified when things occurs with theese softwares.

Puntos a favor

In our workflow, differtents teams meet physically on a regulary basis, and some persons may be part of various teams. Between twoo meetings, team members have questions or informations they want to share with the others. Zulip helps a lot with this, keeping all conversations easily findable and readable, while various subjects are tackled by team members. Sharing file with messages is also a feature we use a lot. We use the hosted version wich is very easy to start with. Also, Zulip is an opensource software, and this is very important to us. Zulip is able to feat at the same time to people who do not communicate a lot and prefer emails in their box, as well as others who share a lot of messages. That is a flexibility I did not found elsewhere.

Desventajas

Images management may sometimes make Zulip laggy on some devices. Notification system is very powerfull and flexible, but seems to fail on some mobile device, and its configuration is not intuitive for occasional users.

Razones para cambiar a Zulip

The conversational approach of Zulip seamed very strong. We also wanted to go with open source software, and this is a strong point with Zulip.

It has been great. Our team uses it all the time. We can certainly recommend Zulip.

Puntos a favor

Zulip is much better than email for our team conversations. It is much more organized and makes it easier to find old but relevant messages. I like the stream/topic way of organizing things. The search history is great and it is convenient that the 'all messages' screen offers a chronological overview of all messages. You can choose who can follow which stream, it has great third-party integrations (Tweets show up quite nicely).

Desventajas

The app no longer shows badges when there are new messages. The desktop version is great but the app has some small issues (for example if you select on the topic, sometimes the message box disappears).

Zulip is much better than Slack

Overall, Zulip is amazing and much better than any other alternatives.

Puntos a favor

Because Zulip is open source, most things that are NOT possible in Slack are possible in Zulip: from automatic calendar notifications, through to integrating with artificial intelligence products such as ChatGPT.

Desventajas

As Zulip is open source, some of the user experience has rough edges (e.g. drafts are a little confusing at first). But onboarding is easy enough for the 1000+ people who support our nonprofit work.

Love it! I use it for my research group, for collaborations both within and outside the group, and for teaching, both for managing course staff and for interacting with students in the class.

Puntos a favor

Threading & thread titles like email (unlike Slack or MS Teams). But b/c its focused on just one part of the organization, it helps keep my actual email less cluttered. Built-in support for math in LaTeX is helpful for research. Ability to add guests lets us have collaborators join our group instance but only have access to certain streams (stream : Zulip :: channel : Slack). Privacy features are great to have a mix of discussions.

Desventajas

Originally I felt like I wanted a more robust feature for keeping track of read/unread messages. But having used it now for several years, turns out I didn't really need that feature and get along just fine without it. Organizing conversations in Zulip works great!

Zulip is great!

Revisado el 9/3/2023

Puntos a favor

I had used Slack before, and found it to be incredibly noisy, distracting and a productivity sink rather than a source. Zulip OTOH is designed to give the user fine grained control over what they choose to pay attention to. Streams and topics keep conversations organized, searchable and allow users to ignore things that would be distracting or irrelevant.

Desventajas

We now have 4 years of communication in Zulip which makes searching very important to revisit past conversations. I sometimes find it challenging to utilize the search functionality well. And if and when I find a message from the conversation that I want to review, it's non-intuitive to navigate from the search results to that full conversation. It's a minor inconvenience though.

Zulip has been crucial for continuous communication and management of my team --- such organization of topics and the throughput that is possible with the chats is not possible through emails. Zulip has definitely been crucial to our productivity

Puntos a favor

Zulip is great because it is open source and not full of ads. This removes all barriers that exist with other apps (like Slack), were you can only see message history up to a certain point, or the need to log into the app to see the message, so that they can advertise to you, or track your location, etc. Basically, Zulip is easy to use, and no funny business

Desventajas

It took some time for us to realizse the potential Zulip offers and figure out how to set up the right amount of streams and themes. We are always trying to keep it clean and simple as to keep everyone engaged. Trying to wean everyone from using Email is a task!

Puntos a favor

We were specifically looking for a platform that would enable our nearly 100 teammembers to communicate, share resources, plan meetings etc. The challenge was that 80% are not digital natives and needed a tool that was easy to use and intuitive. Zulip offers everything we needed without being overloaded with features that can sometimes distract. Keep it simple is the way to go for us.

Desventajas

We use Zulip for communications in our CS department, totaling at the moment 1k users. The experience is mixed: people active in Zulip love it, but some students do not take the most out of it because they prefer the more shiny Discord. In my experience, a voice chat option and a more modern look would help keep those people in.Overall, as a professor, the structure of threads makes communication seamless in the subjects I teach. As such, I'm very happy with the tool.

Puntos a favor

I find the thread model of Zulip to be unbeatable. In my experience, people feel at lost for the first couple of days, but once they get it, they see the value of having every message belonging to a thread. This makes topics and messages very easy to search just by scrolling.

Desventajas

What is currently missing is the easy voice chat that Discord or Slack provide. Some people complain about the interface, for not being easy enough to use and/or for having a retro-style (I like it actually, but I transmit what I've heard).

Revisado el 14/3/2023

We've found it great at coordinating our research group.

Puntos a favor

The best part of Zulip is the way that every conversation is tagged with a lightweight "topic" (so we can always find information later) and the ability to quickly catch up with everything threaded in one chronological view. You don't have to click around to different "rooms" and you don't end up with everything jumbled together and unfindable. The threading works vastly better than Slack or Discord.

Desventajas

New users often find it a bit unfamiliar if they're used to Slack.

An amazing chat app with a killer feature to keep things organized

Revisado el 9/3/2023

Puntos a favor

Zulip is an easy to use chat app similar to Slack or Mattermost. The single best feature is that it has a two level categorization of messages: the traditional channel (called a "stream") that people can subscribe to, but also an additional "topic", more similar to an email subject. This allows to use zulip also for more long-lived discussions, as it is easy to find messages much later by referring to the topic.Additionally, it is easy to use and supports everything that is expected from such a chat app (standard and custom emoji, reaction gifs, markdown formatting, bots, integration with other tools, etc.)

Desventajas

The UI is not as pretty as its competitors, but its functionality more than makes up for it.

I was using a free plan from slack, that is also an excellent tool. But the rules changed and zilip, besides offering me the possibility to import my chats from slack, it has some advantages over slack that are really very useful.

Puntos a favor

Zulip successfully implements many features (over other tools), such as search and topic segregation which, in my opinion, are essential to have an organized discussion. Also, you don't have to throw your data away if you need to change your zulip provider or even if you need to switch to another tool. For example, I was able to import my data from slack and it worked very well. In the future, I can install zulip on my personal server and keep the code running by my own means.

Desventajas

It's not very pretty and some features (like replies to posts) are easily used by programmers, but are not so smooth for the layman. Not being used by many people is its main con because people generally reject changing from one tool to another, enen if the other shows itself better.
